soap opera
America is a place of wonder and dreams and often some pretty strange cultural traditions and events that other people in the world probably think are really odd and embarrassing. But we are American and proud so we don’t care. We will never stop. We can’t be stopped. Bush 4 Life! Mission accomplished! Here are three uniquely American things that Europeans probably laugh at us for:

Demolition Derbies

A bunch of cars crashing into each other is a pretty uniquely American event. I think most other countries would wonder what the point of watching cars bash into each is. I think the appeal of demolition derbies for Americans is that in our car-obsessed culture we find it thrilling to watch these totems of our nation being demolished in front of our eyes. Body kits flying, rust, steel, sparks, deafening noise–this is our America

Monster Truck Rallies

Similar to demolition derbies, the American-ness of monster truck rallies lies not only in the destruction but in the power and in the size, all things that Americans obsess over. These are also things that we are often made fun of for by other countries—our obsession with the biggest cars, the biggest sports stadium, etc. Monster truck rallies are one of the best places to go to see some of the more interesting segments of the American populace. And by interesting I mean moronic. You got that, right?

Professional Wrestling

Now, wrestling itself, in its many forms is hardly uniquely American, but packaging it in an outlandish, soap-opera box definitely is. Mexico is a lover of professional wrestling and the silly costumes that come with it, but even they can’t touch the ridiculousness of the WWE or WCW professional wrestling programs. These shows are less about wrestling and are more of a modern freak show circus, traveling around the country by bus, stopping in cities and putting on a raucous, rowdy show for beer chuggers and impressionable, future trailer park residents.
