Fans of the long-running television soap opera One Life to Live should get themselves ready for some hip-hop beats and flavor to infuse their drama, once record producer and rap artist Timbaland makes his appearance on the series. The songwriter and musician is set to guest star in an episode of the show, and will also perform one of his latest featured hits, “The Way I Are.” TV aficionados can expect the worlds of hip-hop and soap to collide on October 9, when Timbaland is spotlighted with his minor acting role, together with several musical numbers to liven things up.

The songs he’s set to perform are “Apologize” and “The Way I Are,” which are tracks taken from his latest album release, titled Timbaland Presents Shock Value. Also collaborating with him on the album are fellow recording artists OneRepublic and Keri Hilson. For the One Life to Live episode, the plot revolves around a girl named Sara Roberts, who meets up with the character of Christine Vega. Roberts intends to apply for a job opening at the Capricorn club through Vega. When asked to voice his thoughts on working for the television series, Timbaland stated that it was a first time and a new experience for him, and that he hoped to enjoy being able to share his music.

However, the soap opera has already had prior experience in inviting along guest performers to have their tunes featured on the show. Other musical acts that have previously been presented on One Life to Live include Erykah Badu, Mary J. Blige, and Simply Red. During an interview with the website allhiphop.com, series executive producer Frank Valentini explained that he was also a big fan of Timbaland’s music, so the rap artist was a natural choice to guest star on the show.

soap opera
69 years ago, at exactly 6 in the morning, announcer Hal Bowie took his seat before a microphone in a little studio at the top of the Heacock Building in Escolta, and bid his unseen audience good morning.  Thus was born the fourth commercial radio station to operate in Manila.  In just a few years, with the entire Philippine archipelago caught in the maelstrom of the Second World War, the fledgling station - which took the call sign KZRH  -  would buck the challenge of history and remain as the only surviving radio station in the country.

Its auspicious beginnings as the mouthpiece of one of the largest department stores in the Pacific must have laid the groundwork for the station’s commercial viability all these years – a major factor in the survival of the so-called “stepchild of media arts.”

New as it was, KZRH management led by Bertrand Silen was not just armed with the technical know-how in radio operations, but likewise had fundamental marketing knowledge down pat.  They knew what radio listeners liked and disliked.

Musical variety shows, comedy skits, and short newscasts were the order of the day.  Jazz and ballads became standard fare.  Together with American wit, the English language spread.  KZRH found itself as an advertising medium, with sponsors like Purico underwriting specific shows which carried their names.  Apart from 15-minute blocktime sold to advertisers, commercial spots mixing announcements with music were also produced.   KZRH found itself amidst lucrative times.

Then came the grim shadow of war.  The Japanese Imperial Army took over the sophisticated equipment, which eventually got blown sky-high by the Americans.  And while Silen’s staff – considered the best in the Far East – found themselves either in Bataan, at the internment camps of Santo Tomas and Los Banos, within the guerilla movement, or simply felled by enemy bullets, plans for the rebirth of KZRH upon liberation were kept alive.

Upon being released, Silen sought help from the National Broadcasting Company in New York to secure new transmitters, and with the Elizalde family financing the new operations at the Insular Life Building on Plaza Cervantes, KZRH was back on the air under the auspices of Manila Broadcasting Company on July 1, 1946 – just in time to cover the inauguration of the new Republic.

Soon after, the International Telecommunications Union adjusted the call letters of Philippine radio, and all allusions to the western United States through the letter K were removed.  Until today, all radio stations in the Philippines begin with the letter D.

What followed in the next three decades is now collectively known as the golden years of Philippine radio.  Programming flourished and a new breed of radio personalities became cultural icons.  As the recording industry grew, the live orchestras of yore soon gave way to music on vinyl.  Cover versions and Disc Jockeys came into being.  Radio dramas hit an unprecedented boom, eventually translating to the celluloid screen.

Lina Flor’s immortal  Gulong ng Palad, which debuted in 1949, led a slew of soap operas that filled the airlanes in the mornings and afternoons.  Because they had the housewives and sometimes the rest of the domestic ménage as captive audiences, these dramatic serials were strongly supported by major advertisers whose sales messages got very close attention through each saga. Radio dramas picked up on domestic relations, but also featured action, adventure, horror, and even murder-mysteries. Appealing to the imagination as well as to real-life need, DZRH secretaries fondly remember some callers even insisting on speaking to Ginang Hukom herself.

Indeed, DZRH easily adopted the habit of setting trends and institutionalizing them.  Sportscasting dean Willie Hernandez, the network’s comptroller in the mid-fifties, lent his voice to sports coverages and in so doing, made legendary Filipino basketeers like Carlos Loyzaga, Francisco Rabat, and Luis Lorenzo household names.

The feisty commentator Rafael Yabut, also had his sterling years with DZRH.  Starting out as the station electrician, he rose through the ranks to become the station’s PR man.  Loyal fans kept glued to their radios when he hosted the game show Ruleta Musikal.  On the top-rating Tayo’y Mag-aliw, Yabut dwelt on government and politics, family values, trivia, and entertainment.

But it is easily Dely Mapayo who has been - up to this day - the most widely known personality behind the microphone at DZRH. Her easy chatter, contagious laughter, and sparkling wit won her sponsors and hosts of listeners through her career’s work. From the PMC-backed Tugtugin Natin to Himig Panghapunan in vintage years, and eventually the starkly simple Tiya Dely, which DZRH still airs today,  the lady and the station have remained synonymous for over 50 years. Radio quiz shows also emanated from the DZRH studios.  In Spell-to-Win, household appliances were at stake for someone who could spell words like “bouillabaise”. On Best of the Band, popular crooner Bimbo Danao tried to stump the audience with his original game format a-la “name that tune.”  And on Palmolive’s Knowledge Unlimited, even listeners contributed questions such as “what war took place in 1812?”

The Vicks Variety show opened doors for a new program format that addressed Tagalog-speaking audiences with pop-concert presentation of Philippine music.  Singer Jimmie Navarro who won the DZRH radio popularity poll, replaced Mystery Singer Cecil Lloyd and teamed up with Priscilla in performing a new romantic duet every week. While listeners wrote to request old favorites, new compositions were also introduced to the public.

Letter-sending, has indeed, contributed greatly to the way DZRH developed over the years. Ira Davis, who produced the long-running programs of Philippine Manufacturing Company, patiently read through thousands of letters that came in every week. The notes were routed to management and gave them firsthand information on what sort of radio entertainment – even commercial copy – that listeners preferred.  And the advertisers took note of those market preferences.

In later years, DZRH received more immediate feedback — through the telephone, through pocket pagers, through mobile technology, and today, through cyberspace.   But the formula remains the same: innovate…improve…listen…keep the pulse. And decades hence, the station which survived the horrors of war is also surviving the competition. DZRH as the flagship station of Manila Broadcasting Company is proud to be the purveyor of news as it should be delivered, adhering to the highest standards of broadcasting excellence in the country.  It continues to be a witness to Philippine history as it unfolds, and yet remains faithful to the mandate of fair and responsible journalism.  In 1986 it was the only station that aired nationwide a detailed account of the ouster of President Ferdinand Marcos.  Three years later, DZRH reporters found themselves risking life and limb to keep the public abreast of the attempted coup d’etat, and manifesting its spirit of compassion to wounded rebel soldiers.

DZRH today boasts of veteran radioman Joe Taruc anchoring the DZRH team in defining the public affairs program genre from the Pinoy perspective. Despite the seeming erosion of the morning news by the telemagazines,  Taruc remains confident that nothing beats the immediacy of radio.

DZRH News Director Andy Vital, on the other hand, has  taken new media by the horns for the station’s benefit. Internet radio and live chats are used to maximize the station’s accessibility to audiences both here and abroad.  He has also encouraged popular DZRH announcers like Ruth Abao and Rey Sibayan to maintain individual blogs.  And with his iconic colleague “Lakay” Deo Macalma  seemingly attuned to the secret lives of public figures and celebrities alike, vigilance in good governance through reports from his bubwits is still in keeping with the station’s mien for  popular entertainment. But perhaps it is in the field of public service where DZRH has truly earned its merits.    Through Operation Tulong - the station’s socio-civic arm first launched in 1978 –  corporate social responsibility and anonymous Samaritans work hand in hand. Armed with their credo of Serbisyong Bayan, DZRH responds to the needs of the ordinary man-on-the-street with the same compassion and determination it devotes to massive disaster-relief operations, through networking support from advertisers, NGO’s, and government agencies.

On its 69th anniversary, DZRH will conduct a medical-dental mission in cooperation with the Philippine Medical Association, Gat. Andres Bonifacio Medical Center, the Department of Health, the Philippine Air Force,  the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, PAGCOR, and other generous donors.   DZRH has also invited the Optometrists Association of the Philippines to provide free eye examinations, with MBC donating 500 free eyeglasses.  Teaming up with Islands Exhibit Link, the station will likewise hold a two-day Job Fair, with more than 40 participating companies and recruitment firms providing domestic and international work opportunities.   DZRH has also invited the Public Attorney’s office, Batas Barangay, and their network of lawyers to provide free legal assistance.  And for those availing of these public service offerings, DZRH is also serving free porridge (lugaw) as a gesture of unity with the masses who have supported them all these years.

Over a decade ago, the station embarked on a “One Nation, One Station” initiative, expanding its coverage to an unprecedented 97% of the Philippine archipelago. To date, DZRH is the only station in the country that is on the air nationwide 24/7 on stereo-quality, simulcast via satellite to relay stations in key provincial cities.  Through all these, DZRH and the top brass at Manila Broadcasting Company have remained fully cognizant of their target listeners and have used this to master their programming thrust.  They have convinced advertisers to support their efforts at activation and integration in reaching mass audiences.  DZRH taps into the consciousness of the Pinoy, takes inherent socio-cultural phenomena like fiestas, raffles, and machismo sports. . . and actively makes them tick.    At the same time, through creative thinking by the staff and high-quality execution by their announcers, DZRH has translated traditional broadcasting techniques like talk-radio and soap operas into productive and impacting forms of integration or product placement that have become increasingly more efficient in moving brands across a complex media landscape.

But it is the way DZRH announcers today relate to their listeners that truly spells the difference. It is a legacy handed down through generations of broadcasters who knew their audiences.   It is foresight brought about by the changing of the times. It is a style acquired through personal interaction with the man-on-the-street.  And it is a mantle of leadership, new experiences, and empathy toward mankind brought about by having made it through 69 years.

Congratulations, DZRH – kaunaunahan sa Pilipinas!

ou would think that writing about Brazilian women should be an easy task, right? Not really… Since the “Girl from Ipanema” days in the 50´s, all the way to glorious Giselle Bundchen, Brazil women have shown their genetic gift for beauty. The purpose of this article is an attempt to rank the current Top 5 most dazzling Brazilian Brunettes.

Before we review this ranking, we would like to describe a bit of the selection criteria we considered. To join this ranking, Brazilian beauties would necessarily need to have a “Brazilian Look”, which normally means dark hair, brown eyes, and sun-tanned skin. Another very important selection criterion was body shape. Since we up-front defined the “Brazilian Look” as a must for this list, catwalk type models were avoided. Curves are an essential item for a true Brazilian Brunette, or “morena” in Portuguese. A good set of body proportions goes without saying.

Finally, apart from proving a brief biography of each selected personality, we also explained why the dazzling Brazilian brunette was chosen to be a part of this unique ranking.

Top Brazilian Brunette # 1: Nat?a Guimar?. Short Biography: Model, former Miss Universe Brazil. Nat?a Guimar? won the title in April 14 2007 beating out over 26 other contestants from states and the Federal District, Bras?a. On May 28, 2007, Nat?a competed in the 2007 Miss Universe Pageant held in Mexico City, Mexico. She finished as the 1st runner up. Nat?a Guimar? won this poll with almost a third of the votes. Why in the TOP 20 Brazilian Brunettes Ranking? If an E.T. from Mars landed on Earth and asked me to appoint the best example of a Brazilian brunette that would be her. Long perfect straight hair, sensual curves, imaginative dark and unparalleled smile confers Nat?a Guimar? the number 1 post.

Top Brazilian Brunette # 2: Juliana Paes. Short Biography: Actress, former model and drum queen. Juliana Paes is the typical Carioca Girl. Cover girl for several Brazilian magazines, she is considered the top sensual symbol in Brazil. Juliana was also ranked by “People Magazine’s 100 Most Beautiful People” in 2006. Juliana gained famed after successful leading role participations in GLOBO TV soap-operas. She has also done some cinema, musicals, theater plays, and even some fashion shows. As a multi-talented artist Juliana has proven she has more than a gorgeous body. Why in the TOP 20 Brazilian Brunettes Ranking? Juliana Paes is the equivalent of Marilyn Monroe in Brazil and is still considered by many Brazilians as the sexiest woman alive in the country. In addition to her lively personality, Juliana has fascinating eyes and nearly perfect curves. Juliana is our silver medalist. Juliana Paes genetic backgrounds include the native Indians of Brazil, Negro and European roots.

Top Brazilian Brunette # 3: Nat?a Anderle. Short Biography: Model. Nat?a Anderle is 22 years old and was born in the countryside of Rio Grande do Sul, a state in the south of Brazil. Nat?a Anderle was crowned Miss Brazil Universe 2008 at a beauty pageant held in the Citibank Hall, in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Why in the TOP 20 Brazilian Brunette Ranking? Natalia Anderle has beautiful long legs, thin nose and shiny straight dark hair. Her eyes are of rare symmetry and are very Brazilian. Natalia will definitely reach the limelight.

Top Brazilian Brunette # 4 : Mariana Fel?o. Short Biography: Model, until four years ago, no one in Brazil had ever heard of this wonder girl from the country-side of Sao Paulo. Mariana had a tough life from the moment she was born. For a long time she modeled and also worked as a fisherwoman, until was invited to join a reality show, where she showed all her charisma and personality. Why in the TOP 20 Brazilian Brunettes Ranking? Our fourth position goes to Mariana Fel?o´s dazzling eyes and low-key personality. Mariana shows it is possible to be a tall model, and display natural Brazilian curves. Her beauty may be a simple one, but in this case, less means much more.

Top Brazilian Brunette # 5: Camila Pitanga . Short Biography: Actress, Model. Camila Pitanga is the daughter of actor Antonio Pitanga and actress Vera Manh?. Camila started her carrier as a model and studied acting and interpretation at Tablado Theater school. Slowly she showed her great talent as an actress. Some of her most important project included soap-opera Para? Tropical” as Bebel, movies such as “Saneamento B?co, O Filme”, “Noel: The Samba Poet”, “Bendito o Fruto,” in 2004 and 2006 the movie “Mulheres do Brasil” playing a character called Esmeralda. Camila is surely a name Hollywood producers should keep an eye at. Why in the TOP 20 Brazilian Brunettes Ranking? Camila Pitanga has an exquisite skin color and elegant pose that makes 10 out 10 foreigners go crazy. To a certain extent, Camila is perfect example of Brazil’s irresistible melting pot.

We hope our readers were able to depict through this article the visual identity of an authentic Brazilian brunette, as well as the essence of the “Brazilian look”. We believe one of the reasons why Brazil has so many beautiful women is a direct result of the “melting pot factor”, with a perfect blend of several different genetic backgrounds intermingling in harmony. More important than beauty alone, all of the Brazilian muses listed above are true talents in their artistic careers. As John Keats wrote in 1819, “‘Beauty is truth, truth beauty, - that is all Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.”

soap opera
There’s a secret place that women go to in order to get their sexual needs met.

Men seem to be mostly unaware of this place…and TOTALLY unaware of what’s really going on inside…

If asked, many husbands would tell you that their wife just isn’t very sexual.  They would tell you that sex is WAY DOWN towards the bottom – if not at the bottom – of their wife’s list of what’s important.

And, these men have no clue how wrong they are about their wife.

If they could somehow sneak into their wife’s mind for just one day, they would be SHOCKED at just how sexual their wife really is.

These men think they are married to a “cold fish” and they don’t even know that their wife is a very sexual person – and she’s personally taking care of getting her sexual needs met…

Without him!

Now, you can breathe easy knowing that most of these wives aren’t engaging in physical sex with other men…

But inside their minds, inside their most INCREDIBLE SEX “ORGAN” (their minds), all sorts of sexual thoughts are going on.

Hardly a day goes by but what these wives make sure they find a time and a place where they can let their mind take flight off to a wonderful land of sexual fantasy.

And, whereas a man’s sexual fantasy usually has a primary focus on the visual and physical aspects of sex, a woman’s sexual fantasy usually has far more “story” to it.

This is because a lot of what turns a woman on is EXPERIENCING a dichotomy of emotions – its contrasting feelings that do the trick for her.

So, when she can experience a story of highs and lows, the familiar and the mysterious, the known and the unknown, the friend and the stranger, the deceiver and the deceived, the loss and the gain, the new and the old, etc. in the realm of dating, romance, and marriage, it becomes a very sexual experience for her.

In other words, as a woman EXPERIENCES the TENSION created by the dichotomy of emotions contained within her “story” she TRANSMUTES the expression of her sexuality from the physical realm into the mental realm.

She dare not tell her husband – or any man for that matter – but it’s nevertheless true.

So, do you now see where you’re wife is getting her sexual needs met?  She’s getting them met in her mind – with the help of prop’s like romance novels and soap opera’s.

Maybe, you can do a little investigation for yourself…

Go take a stroll through your nearest used book store.  You’ll be BLOWN AWAY by the aisles and aisles of floor-to-ceiling bookshelves FILLED with romance novels.

And notice, these books are NOT collecting any dust – they’re flying off the shelves as hoards of women are buying, selling, and trading them.

If that’s too much of a trip for you, just waltz over to your wife’s bookshelf – and notice all the romance novels that she has.

Then, take a stroll over to the TV that she watches – and check out the GIGABYTES of soap operas that she’s recorded…

All designed to help her meet her sexual needs – all designed to help her create that dichotomy of emotions – so that she can get sexual “release” without you.

She’d rather it be WITH YOU…

She’d rather you TUNE IN and CHECK IN to her sexuality…

She’d rather you be the one who provides her with that emotional excitement that’s so sexually stimulating to her…

She’d rather you be the one who “takes her on a journey”…

…so that she can enjoy sex at the physical level too.

Here’s something you can do…buy a romance novel and ask your wife to let you read it to her.  As you read, pay attention – pay attention to the dichotomy of emotions being created by the story.  Pay attention to the responses and reactions of your wife.  By paying attention, you’ll LEARN – from both the romance novel and from your wife.

You may think this is a stupid idea but if you’re smart, you’ll try it – and you’ll find out for yourself that it definitely takes your relationship in a sexual direction.

If you have ever been through a breakup, you already know how horrible it can be. You know that life can seem unbearable but you may not know that it can be easy to put your life on track with just a little determination. You can also look at getting back your ex just as easily with a well-thought out devised plan. There are 3 tips you should follow so you do not ruin your chances with your ex.

Tip 1 - Take Me Back Attack

Once a breakup occurs, the first initial reaction is to give your ex all your undivided attention. You may try to persuade your ex to work out the problems and give each other a second chance. However, what you are actually doing is sending him or her further away from your attempts. The best thing you should is actually nothing at all. By giving him or the space they need, you have the time to heal yourself.

Tip 2 - Drunk Dialing

Just like it suggests, drunk dialing leads to making a fool of yourself during the overnight hours. It entails you calling your ex during a fit of excessive drinking. Any feeling of loss you feel is enhanced with your drinking and all you want to do is hear your ex’s voice and make them see reason for why you should be back together again. You call them and may either get them on the phone or their voicemail. No matter what you think, this is never a good idea and needs to be avoided at all costs. All you will end up with is a nasty hangover and bruised ego.

Tip 3 - Soap Opera Splurge

This tip is namely for women so what is a soap opera splurge? It means you sit back, watch television, with a box of tissue nearby with a bunch of ice cream buckets near her. Not only is this not sexy, it’s also very unhealthy. If you think this will be the way you can get back your ex, you are seriously misled. Instead, lay down the spoon, put up the ice cream and pull yourself together. Get your courage together and work at getting back your ex.

Usually when someone is speaking about soap operas, what will come to mind are the daytime television dramas that have captivated many housewives for more than five decades, with new followers getting on board all the time.

Day time soaps are more popular than ever. Many women and even some men, have been following these never ending, never repeated shows for years almost religiously.

The newest soap operas are those that are aired during prime television viewing hours, somewhere between 7 and 9 p.m. at night. These night time soap operas came on the scene during the 1970’s. The first ones that were really big hits were Dallas and its spin off show, Knots Landing. These soaps were made a little differently than their day time counterparts.

Following the lead of these pioneering night time dramas in more recent years were shows like ER, The O.C., Desperate Housewives, and one of the latest hits, Grey’s Anatomy.

These new shows have an even bigger following than the first ones. Entire seasons of many of these prime time soaps can be purchased on DVD today and their reruns are already being broadcast on satellite and cable channels.

Evening shows such as those mentioned, were the catalyst that rocketed several of their actors and actresses to stardom. Brad Pitt for example, got one of his first significant roles on Dallas. Pitt also acted on the day time soap, Another World. Joan Collins had acted for years, but her fame only reached its peak after she starred on Dallas.

George Clooney, though he had been acting for a while, really became famous playing an emergency room doctor on ER in the 1990’s. Today Pitt and Clooney are two of the biggest stars around, as well as Demi Moore, who also got her start in daytime dramas.

On the hit show, Desperate Housewives, the actresses Marcia Cross, Felicity Huffman, Eva Longoria, and Terri Hatcher, all seem to be almost equally sharing the fame that the show has brought them. It has been on for several seasons and shows no signs of waning fans.

It must be that there are two elements that make prime time soap operas so appealing to such a broad and committed audience. The first reason being they often have such outlandish story lines that they could probably never be a situation in our own mundane lives.

The second reason being, that some story lines can hit us so close to home and pack such an emotional punch, that we begin to feel a real connection to the characters that we have come to love. These shows provide us with both sides of a coin, so to speak.

For his time, William Shakespeare wasn’t considered all that hot a writer. His plays were thought to pander to the vulgar masses being at the same time the modern day equivalent of either Soap Operas or Sit cons. Bob Denver’s passing made me wonder if in three or four hundred years time Gilligan’s Island won’t be considered the pinnacle of the Dramatic Arts, much as the Bard’s plays are considered now.

Think about it: In three or four hundred years time, no one will really understand twentieth century English, anymore than we understand Elizabethan English. We think Shakespeare is so great mostly because we don’t know what the hell they’re friggin’ talking about, you know, all those ‘Hither’s’ and ‘ thee’s’ and ‘yon’s”. So, we all pretend we do and nod solemnly and praise the ‘beautiful’ language when we really don’t want to look stupid. Centuries from now it will be the same with Gilligan’s Island. Our descendents will be ‘oohing’ and ‘ahhing’ over the beautiful language of this show.

As envisioned by creator Sherwood Schwartz, Gilligan’s Island was meant to be Social Commentary using the metaphor of cast-a-ways trapped on an island, each one of the cast-a-ways was iconic of an American segment of society. The interaction between the characters would be symbolic of the interaction in our cultures. Thus, you have Mr. Howell and his wife representing the American Upper classes, The Skipper representing the working classes, The professor representing the intelligentsia, Ginger the entertainment sector, Mary Ann the rural Midwest and Gilligan … all of us. Gilligan was the American Everyman.

As with The Tempest, the island setting represented the deep psychological underpinnings of the story. Here you have a world unto itself separated from civilization, a Hobbesian state of nature where life is nasty, brutish and short. Thus it is human nature itself.

By the way, if you’re a High School or College student looking for stuff to steal for a term paper … go ahead and steal this. None of these ideas are mine, anyways. And it’s not really plagiarism if it’s already been copied from somewhere else in the first place, so feel free to use this all you want. What’s that? Just a second …..

Oh. I just found out it is plagiarism. I’m sorry. My Bad.

There also is the Religious interpretation of Gilligan’s Island. This interpretation has each of the cast-a-ways representing one of the seven deadly sins in a sort of morality play. The Howells represent Greed, of course. The Skipper represents Gluttony, that one’s obvious, too. Gilligan is Sloth … I think. Ginger is Vanity. The professor is pride, because he’s so pround of how smart he is and Mary Ann …. she doesn’t seem so sinful, but I know there was one that was supposed to represent her.

Bob Denver by all accounts was a very intelligent and talented actor. You’d have to think that it would take a genius to play the part of such a boob to perfection. Denver’s career, I have to believe, must have been forever crippled by brilliance of his character portrayal, such that he was never offered another acting role of merit because he had forever captured that one role to perfection, and was condemned ever after to live in that twilight world of Conventions and Super Market openings.

Now, please remove your hats and sit right back and you’ll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip..

I’m going to start off this whole shebang by giving you my take on women in general.

I know, I know. Every woman is a unique creature. But women have more commonalties than they have differences. So let’s start with what I think they have in common and then we’ll move on to how they differ. (The ideas that I’m about to share with you here are from my own research, testing in the real world, and personal analysis.)

For most men, a woman is like a Chinese puzzle inside of a brain twister.

Much of their behavior makes no sense at all (to men).

If there’s one thing that I’m clear about, it’s that most women THINK differently than most men, and most women want different things than most men.

This is hard for many men to grasp or understand, but it’s true. And the sooner you get a handle on what’s going on here, the sooner you’ll become more successful with women.

Let’s start by comparing what men and women are interested in.

Have you ever stopped to think about what entertains women as a group compared to what entertains men as a group? Women buy Cosmopolitan magazines, watch soap operas, and read romance novels. Men buy Playboy, watch sports, and read the paper.  Hey, wait a minute here! What’s in those Cosmos, soaps, and romance novels? And why are women so attracted to them?

And why is it that when men try to watch a soap opera or read a romance novel all they can say is, “I don’t get it…”?

I’ll tell you why. It’s because women’s brains are wired differently from men’s brains. That’s why.

And by telling you about what attracts women’s attention, I’ve also given you a clue about how to attract them to YOU.

There are many people in this world that must suddenly drop everything that they are doing at a particular hour during the day because it is time for their favorite soap opera.

You know those day time series that never end. Men and women alike, though it is statistically mostly women, who can not bear to miss even one episode of their most loved day time program.

Soap operas got their start as programs on the radio. They were sponsored by soap manufacturers, soap manufacturers who knew that is was in large women who purchased their products. These radio programs were directed at women and were aired on the radio during the day when most women were cleaning and cooking at home.

They were full of love, romance, and intrigue. They had a continuing story line and would usually end a program each day in a cliff hanging situation so that a listener would be sure to tune in the next day. Hopefully they would also be reminded that were in need of a new box of detergent or soap of some kind.

Soap operas today follow the same pattern as when they first started years ago. They still have cliff hangers, especially on Friday’s episodes. They still have a more faithful than ever audience, only they watch on television instead of listening on the radio.

The one thing that can separate daytime soaps from other shows that might share the term soap, like Dallas, Knots Landing, or today’s biggest prime time hit, Desperate Housewives, is that daytime soaps never have re runs.

Everyday is a brand new episode. This could be one reason that they have endured as a program type for so many years. Many people who watch them are so enthralled by them that they had rather miss dinner than miss their best soap opera.

It is much easier for people who watch these almost addictive programs to keep current with what is going on even if they miss a show or two. The Soap Opera network which can be seen on cable and satellite television is a non stop 24 hours a day broadcast station of soap operas.

So if a viewer misses the show they love the most during the day, they have the opportunity to catch the missed episode on the Soap channel later. This is great for those faithful fans that have found their selves having to work a day job who thought they had to give up following the soap opera that they have probably been watching for years.

It was recently reported that Drake Hogestyn of Days of Our Lives has been fired from the long-running soap opera. A representative for the show has already denied the rumors, however many have still been talking about his departure, mainly due to the changes they have done behind the scenes and his dissatisfaction with the series.

For more than 20 seasons, Hogestyn has worked on Days of Our Lives as John Black, who was mostly shown lying comatose on a hospital bed. John regained consciousness only in May, however was still not able to receive a satisfactory amount of exposure on the soap opera.

Drake Hogestyn finally disclosed his discontent with the daytime drama during a fan event, thus intensifying rumors of him leaving the show.

“At some point, everybody is going to leave the show,” Hogestyn said. “I have six months left on my contract, so… After 20 years of throwing fan club gatherings, this is the final mission. The reality of it is, sooner or later, you’re at the tail [end] of your talent cycle, whether it be here or somewhere else.”

Moreover, a spokesperson for Days of Our Lives announced that Drake Hogestyn has not cut ties with the soap opera yet, even if two popular soap magazines have already questioned the actor’s future with the daytime drama. Some say that the representative’s statement was just part of the network’s ordered publicity, and fans will have to wait and see if Hogestyn will renew his contract once it expires a few months from now.

Hogestyn’s work-related problems aren’t the only things in his mind as he has been through some personal problems earlier this year. Before the end of 2006, a crazed fan busted into Hogestyn’s house with a bible, claiming to be on a mission to exorcize the actor. Hogestyn reported that the fan was calling him by his character’s name, and strongly believed that he was being possessed by the devil. The fan was sentenced in February.

soap opera
I love to watch All My Children.  It has evolved into one of the best soap operas that has ever been broadcast.  The beginning episodes centered around the Martin household.  This is where Jeff Martin lived.  He was sort of the town’s good boy.  That is until he met Erica Kane, the town’s bad girl.  Erica tricked him into have a child with her so that he would marry her. This was the first of several marriages for Erica.  I think she has been married seven or eight times.  She is still on this show.  Now she is beginning an affair with her daughter’s ex-boyfriend.

Over the years this soap opera has featured story lines with some of the major issues of the day.  There was the first black teenage couple which had a prominant role is a daytime soap opera, Jessie and Angie.  They met in high school and it was the typical love story.  Jessie was from the wrong side of the track and Angie was from a very prominant black family.  Angie became pregnant with Jessie’s child and ran away with him to be married.

The current characters include quite a few of the original cast members.  Jesse and Angie returned to the show with the son they had in high school.  Tad Martin returned to the show.  Even Liza returned to the show.  Erica never leaves the show for very long periods of time.  She is really the backbone of the show.  Almost every storyline eventually revolves around Erica Kane.  She has been in jail on numerous occasions for murder, she was raped on the show and had a child by the rapist.  She has so many affairs it is impossible to count them.  She has been married more times than any other femaile soap opera star on any soap opera.  Erica is what keep Pine Valley running.

I am writing about this particular soap opera because I heard that the filming will now be in California rather than New York.  I just want everyone on the cast to know that they are still No. 1 in my book.  This soap opera was my favorite show when I was in college in the 70’s.  It is still one of my favorites today.  If you really want to watch one show that has it all, you should really watch All My Children.

soap opera
Nigerian Soap operas/drama productions, rocked our TV screens back in the days (especially in the 80’s), which transcended into the 90’s from “Cock Crow at Dawn, Village Headmaster, Mirror in the Sun, Behind the Clouds, Ripples, Mind Bending, to Supple Blues , Checkmate, Fortunes, amongst others. Foreign comedies as well dominantly from the USA and Britain gave Nigerians a worth while fun time viewing experience, such as “Jeffersons, Good Times, Sanford and Sons, Different Strokes, Mixed Blessings, Mind your language, Doctor in the House, Rising Dam, Some Mothers do have them, Rent A Ghost,” amongst others. Unfortunately, they stopped the broadcast of these programmes and Nigerians had to be content with the stream of   local productions that were flung in our faces.

However, “The Rich Also Cry” back in the late 80’s set the precedent for a plethora of Latin American telenovelas (dominantly from Mexico) and in some cases Venezuela, to flood our screens. It was the first Telenovela that ruled the Nigerian airwaves back in the days. Following the viewership hit recorded, “Secrets of the Sand”, “No One But You”, “Lady of the Rose”, “Maria de los Angeles”, took successive turns in entertaining Nigerians with the latin American flavoured stories. Unfortunately, somewhere along the 90’s, the broadcast of the Telenovelas came to an abrupt halt, closing the book of the Latin American epoch of thrilling, exciting, cliff hanger moments, and intricate plots. Nigerians especially those living in Lagos state (The Hub of the Entertainment Industry) had to make do with other foreign genres other than drama, broadcast straight into our living rooms especially from God’s own country.

However, the revival of telenovelas  on our screens returned with a big bang in 2005 with “Cuando Seas Mia(when you are mine)” with 238 episodes starring Paloma/Elena Olivares( Silvia Navarro), Diego Sanchez Serrano (Sergio Basanez), broadcast on African Independent television (AIT) at 9pm and MITV at 7pm from Monday to Friday. To say the least, at such times especially at 9pm, women, teens, children and surprisingly a good number of the men folk tuned to AIT’s frequency to watch fresh episodes of the programme. Great was the response to the telenovela that even with the epileptic power supply in the country at that time(which hasn’t changed) families were seen  eagerly powering on the  generators  to watch, while those who didn’t have one could be spotted at open bars, clubs, local restaurants, shops, neighbours/ friends apartments gladly watching same.

The cliff hanger moments were always heart stopping and at the end of each episode splinter groups would emerge, giving their views about what transpired in various scenes in the episode, what could and couldn’t have been done by a particular character, who they suspected was the guilty party, and a prediction of what would happen in the next episode. To miss an episode was to miss out big time! and those who did miss it where seen the next day eagerly asking to be filled in on the details by their friends at schools, offices etc. All the actors and actresses played their roles well and none was found wanting. Shouts of Paloma, Diego, The three witches (Barbara, Berenice, Angela), Mariano, Fabian and other characters never failed to come up during discussions. It was a great story which kept Nigerians glued to their TV sets at the fixed times. Thumbs up to the script writer, casting director, director, and the entire crew who made our viewing pleasure a memorable one.

“Catalina n Sebastian”, “The Gardener’s Daughter”, “Second Chance” also recorded good viewership. Second chance having been concluded an American soap took over in its stead, unfortunately Nigerians were not that receptive to  it and I think the sponsors realized that they ought not to have changed the winning brand, and have come up with another telenovela  “Until my last breath” shown only on AIT at 10pm. Other TV stations such as Galaxy, MBI (now defunct), NTA 10, STV, TVC have also leveraged on the popularity of the Latin American telenovelas and have / still airing them such as  “Lorenzo’s Wife”, “la Usurpadora”, “Esmeralda”, “Camila”, “Rebeca”, “Rubi”, “La Revancha, “Storm Over Paradise”.

Perhaps, the beauty of these televovelas lies not only in its foreign origin but its content which brings to bear the realities of life encapsulated in betrayal, deceit, love, hatred, thirst for power and fortune, heart breaks, class distinction standing as a hurdle to marriage, weakness of man, seeming insurmountable mountainous challenges which man irrespective of race, nationality, tribe, gender, religion, confronts on a daily basis. The suspense/cliff hanger moments, intrigues, makes one want to watch the next episode. Love, quest for true love and happiness is greatly projected in the telenovelas and tends to revolve around the plot of the story. Serenade (which is alien to this part of the world) is respectively seen in scenes where love is being professed and re-assured. They no doubt have a great love culture.

The English voiceovers for the characters with certitude achieved through a high level of professionalism helps non- Spanish speaking people follow the unfolding drama in the story easily. Imagine if it had been subtitled, not everyone would have been able to keep up with the on going dialogue. Another thing they have going for them happens to be the theme songs. The theme song for “When you are mine” became a ‘soap opera anthem’ on the lips of Nigerians (even though we couldn’t understand the lyrics of the song) but the beats, chorus, and the voice of the lead vocalist made the song a memorable one. La Usurpadora, Rebeca, Until my last breath also have good theme songs.  Nigerians can clearly reel out certain phrases reflected in the dialogue process by the actors and actresses such as “My Love, Love of my life, I swear to you, forgive me, On the contrary, Salu,”.

However, certain  negative re-curring decimals such as unforgiveness, paving the way for revenge, the propounding of the love theory as a justifiable reason for adultery and sought after happiness, divorce, separation, single parenting, lustful desires, cleavage revealing tops relegates Christian doctrines to the background in a country where the Christian faith is presumably practised. This has the tendency to send the wrong signals to people from other Nations.

Despite the short comings, the Telenovelas have overtime proven to be worth being sponsored and watched by the Nigerian populace. It is my utmost belief that more of these exciting soaps will continue to hit our screens. Nigerians, are however waiting patiently for the Latin American telenovela that would surpass the overwhelming effect “The Rich Also Cry” and “Cuando Seas  Mia” had on them.

Julian Rosefeldt’s Global Soap project is a vast collection of soap opera images archiving housewives’ favourites from all over the globe. Highlighting the TV template of formulaic plotlines and fluency in the universal language of schmaltz, Rosefeldt’s Soap photos present multiple panels of characters playing out identikit roles. Cropped to the format of actor’s publicity shots, the groupings of Rosefeldt’s subjects read like multi-national casting calls for archetypal villains and victims.

Within Rosefeldt’s project issues of racial and national difference give way to the fashion of globalised sameness. The perception of ‘other’ is removed from ethnic preconception with each figure identified through their familiar dramatic parts rather than their outward appearance. As rows of characters shake fingers and scowl, wave hands with indignation, or gesture in false modesty, Rosefeldt trades the habits of cultural assumption for the altogether more alluring indulgence in titillation and melodrama.

Julian Rosefeldt approached the offices of the Goethe Institut around the world and asked them to record soap operas from their respective national television channels. With the video tapes they provided, Rosefeldt constructed a moving picture archive of the stereotypes of soaps. The gestures, expressions and language of characters were condensed into sequences of multi-national, multi-cultural archetypes that conflated the diverse with the unified and the ‘other’ with the mainstream. Intertwined or emphatic fingers, furrowed brows, clasped breasts and heads in hands transcended cultural boundaries to be subsumed into a global language of stereotypical emotional shorthand. In the soap opera everyday life merges with a fantasy world. The illusion is played out in reality as it contributes to the process of establishing cultural meaning.

soap opera
The term “Old Time Radio” refers to the entertainment programs that were broadcast to the public from the early 1920s to the early 1960s. In the beginning, most radio programs emulated the vaudeville acts that were the mainstay of public amusement before radio. Comics and singers ruled the airwaves! Best of all, you no longer had to leave your home to enjoy their talents! Eventually, however, audiences matured and other types of programs were added to the radio schedule. Drama series became extremely popular including shows about doctors, soap operas, and even movie scripts that were adapted for radio. Action series brought cops, robbers, private detectives, and westerns into the home! Fantasy series thrilled audiences with well known characters including Superman and the Green Hornet! Horror fans got their share of ghosts, vampires, and werewolves. Those who craved science fiction got their weekly craving for tales of the future, space travel, and exploration of the unknown. Game shows like “You Bet Your Life” gave the average person an escape from everyday life!

The first commercial radio station in the U.S. (KDKA in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) began occasional broadcasting in 1920. By 1922, the first regularly broadcast old time radio shows had begun. Up until the late 1920s, musical programs were most popular with shows highlighting opera, big bands, jazz, classical, and popular music.

In the 1930s, the first daytime series appeared featuring romance and other subject matter that appealed to the typical American housewife. Most of those programs were sponsored by soap products and that’s where the term “Soap Opera” originated. Radio shows like “The Cisco Kid” and “Captain Midnight” were broadcast in the afternoons for the entertainment of young people as they returned home from school. Comedy series began to appear including the “George Burns and Gracie Allen Show” and the “Jack Benny Show” which both began in 1932. “Amos ‘N Andy” actually hit the airwaves in 1928! Then in the early 1940s, a nearly never-ending list of comedy programs joined those pioneers and comedy shows became the most prolific genre through the end of Old Time Radio.

By 1947, 82% of people in the U.S. listened to the radio on a regular basis. The Old Time Radio shows were not like most audio books of today where someone with a pleasant voice reads you a book. Old Time Radio shows were productions just like the television programs of today. There were sound effects, multiple actors in multiple roles, and first rate scripts! Many people today are shocked at how entertaining they can be when they hear their first Old Time Radio program. The lack of video can actually be a plus! Your mind often imagines the characters and scenery much better than seeing those things on a television screen.

Most Old Time Radio Shows were aired live up until the late 1940s. Therefore, the most popular shows had to be performed twice due to the time difference between the east coast and the west coast. Most of those programs are lost to us today as they were generally not recorded. There are exceptions where and advertiser wanted copies of their programs or for some programs that aired in syndication. Thankfully, by the early 1950s, many programs were broadcast live on the east coast and recorded for later broadcast on the west coast. A surprisingly large number of those recordings are still in existence today thanks, mostly, to collector/hobbyists who acquired them through the years. Due to their age, most of those are available free of charge on the web or at very low cost on cd (in mp3 format) from numerous vendors.

In the mid 1950s TV was becoming the king of entertainment and radio was transforming into a mostly musical format. There were shows, however, that continued for a few more years and some of them even aired at the same time as a TV version of the same program.

Las Vegas Disc Jockey John Dote’ Produced Theme From Dallas

Airs Next: CBS at Friday 9:00 PM (60 min.)

Status: Ended Premiered: April 2, 1978 Last Aired: May 3, 1991

Show Categories: Drama, Soap

More Pictures In the ranks of prime-time dramas, this was one of the biggest.

Dallas, the saga of the Ewing Family, began as a five part mini-series in 1978. Throughout it’s thirteen seasons, many actors passed through the gates of Southfork. Below are the main cast, but in addition you find throughout the episode synopsis, many other faces, some familiar, some soon to be familiar faces creating drama for the Ewings!

In the late 1960’s, Peyton Place was a nighttime serial drama success—a novelty at the time. But since then, no P.M. show had caught the soap opera crowd’s attention… until Dallas. The show first went on the air for a five week run in early 1978, and then fell into a Saturday nighttime slot later that year.

Ratings were fair, but they were nothing compared to when the show moved to Friday nights, when the ratings well didn’t run dry for a long, long time.

The Ewing family lived at the sprawling South Fork ranch, in hoity-toity Braddock County just outside Dallas. Like any good power family, there was a matriarch and patriarch, and three sons— this core group, their extensive romantic relations, and the Barnes clan of rival oilers were all Jacobs needed to create a self-contained histrionic world of intrigue, dysfunction and passion. Borrowing from Romeo and Juliet, the youngest Ewing boy, Bobby, fell for a beautiful Barnes girl. And with a nod to the biblical Cain and Abel, Bobby and older brother J.R. didn’t exactly play nice with each other like you might expect brothers to. Whereas J.R. was nearly a hundred percent scoundrel, Bobby had discernable streaks of honesty and integrity…but that patented Ewing viciousness certainly reared its head once in a while. The South Fork ranch housed Jock and Miss Ellie, the king and queen of South Fork, J.R. and long-suffering wife Sue Ellen, and Bobby and Pamela…though why they all lived under one roof demands a little poetic license, because money certainly wasn’t a problem, and it wasn’t like there was a whole lot of binding inter-family harmony.

Here’s just a taste of the drama devices that ensued: insane asylums, car accidents, affairs, illegitimate children, gunfights, fistfights, catfights, lies, drinking problems (both real and imagined), poufy 80’s hairstyles for the ladies and best of all, notorious season finale cliffhangers.

The most famous, of course, came at the end of the 1979-80 season, when a mysterious late-night intruder shot J.R. in the chest while he was toiling away at the office one night. The resulting “Who Shot J.R.?” publicity raced around the globe, because by that time, Dallas was an international hit in just about every developed country in the world. Odds on the shooter’s identity were figured, bets were placed, and theories were construed– since there were about fifteen possible candidates, fans and pundits were kept very busy indeed. Don’t read the next part of this sentence if you want to remain one of the few of-age humans who doesn’t know whodunit… it was Kristin, J.R.’s scorned sister-in-law and recent romantic entanglement.

Dallas was conceived as a show that had plenty of sex and romance for the female audiences, and a lot of cowboy posturing and business intrigue for the male viewers. The formula worked, because by the early 1980’s, it was one of the most popular shows in TV history. There were magazine covers galore, a spin-off named Knots Landing about Gary, the middle Ewing son who wasn’t seen or heard from much during proceedings at South Fork, and primetime serialization imitators like Dynasty and Falcon Crest.

So for the show that kicked off the nighttime drama trend that’s status quo today, we tip those ten-gallon hats and breathe a secret sigh of relief that J.R. was just a fictional character who couldn’t manipulate us in real life. Because let’s be honest, that guy could have taken most of us down.

In 1986, John Dote’ produced the soundtrack theme from Dallas on American Artists Records which charted at number 6. The theme was removed from radio, but then re-added when Dote’ hired Little Richards promotion men.

soap opera
He is called the Shiekh of the Nigerian movie industry known as Nollywood. He’s the brain behind the longest running soap opera in Nigeria “Ripples” which lasted for 5 years uninterrupted.

Most of the brightest stars the sector can boast of today were discovered by him, Just as he produced most of the films that raised the industry to international recognition.

His name is Zeb Ejiro and his contributions to the movie industry stand him out as a grand master of the make-believe industry.

Over the years, this Mass Communications graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has held enviable positions, including being president of the Association of Movie Producers (AMP). He is presently the Vice Chairman, Board of Trustees, AMP, Trustee, Directors Guild of Nigeria and a member of a few other organisations.

The road to the movie world started for him after writing a script for NTA titled “But My Ring on My Grave”.He was among the 27 people chosen by NTA out of the about 5,000 people who applied, and was later trained by NTA and BBC in 1985 in script writing, directing / producing.

Though he stayed with NTA for a while, when he left he still wrote scripts for NTA on village Headmaster, Second chance and other programmes. He later created his first soap Opera Ripples .

Later he moved on to Fortunes then changed the name to Mega Fortunes. His quest for more launched him into the movie industry. The first movie he shot as a director was Nneka the Pretty Serpent. Then, Fatal Desire where Hilda Dokubo debuted, Ikoko 2 followed and then Mortal Inheritance among many others.

On why he had lied low in the past few years he says: it gets to a point in one’s life when one gets bored about doing one thing again and again, and you just need something more challenging. I think I have gotten to a stage whereby I need to start impacting knowledge to people because God has blessed me so much. That is why I have been spending my time building a film school in Delta State. It is called Film and Broadcast Academy. We intend to teach script writing, production management, directing and anything that has to do with film making and television broadcasting. This is where I have been channeling my energy.

On how the industry has fared he says “The industry has done well, yes. But, atimes, tears run down my cheeks because this is not the industry we built. It is presently in total comatose. It is down and if care is not taken it will be out. Training is lacking in the industry. People are not trained. Most of the people you see in the industry today came in through apprenticeship. Apprenticeship is good, but it is better to go and get formal training, because you’ll raise your standard.

Also, there is the distribution network problem. I think at this point in time, my take is that there should be a shift. There should be a change of guard. We have a new Minister of Information and I think she should inject new blood into the Censors board and the NFC.

He futher describes the African Movis Award (AMAA) as d only credible award presently in Nigeria and Africa, as it has given movie makers something to look forward to every year.

Zeb Ejiro sees himself as one of the richest and happiest producers/directors in the country today, in the sense that many of the big stars in Nollywood debuted in his movies. In his words he says “Many of them are about the biggest today and they have been working so hard making names for themselves. All of them too accord me that respect from time to time. I got Omotola Jolade-Ekeinde a Hollywood movie with Genevieve Nnaji and we all travelled. She shed tears and told me that I have been instrumental to her success. She said she was going to show her appreciation someday and that what she was going to do, I’ll be surprised. I cried when she said that. Genevieve said the same thing too, because I gave her major break-through. Regina Askia, Liz Benson, RMD, Ngozi Ezeonu, Jennifer Okere, Alex Osifo-Omiagbo, etc.

After an award ceremony one day, Chief Raymond Dokpesi called me and said that more than 80 per cent of people who received awards that day dedicated it to me, meaning I must have done a lot in their lives. I think it is based on this that the federal government commended my contribution by giving me the honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON)”.

On low sales of movies he attributes it to this “I think it’s because Nigerians are tired of what we produce. Storylines are shallow and lack depth. Plots are nothing to write home about. When there is nothing to keep you glued to your set, you switch it off. To change this, we need a change at the top. We need people who can handle the mantle of leadership. We need people who have vision. Training schools should be empowered to train us. We want a governing body.. We need to raise standards, so that we can do more professional jobs so that we will be able to compete internationally.

Presently Zeb says he has a movie he has finished shooting but he won’t release it until there’s a change in the movie distribution network.

soap opera
Every day at four o’clock, I stop whatever it is I am doing to watch my favorite soap opera. I take the phone off the hook, lock the door, sit with a cup of freshly brewed coffee, and escape. It has become an addiction. One that I like having.

Almost every time I do this, I am astounded at how much better the lives of these people are than mine. There are some basic facts, Ladies and Gentlemen, that apply only to soap opera people, the women in particular.

The women in soap operas are always extraordinarily beautiful. The women in soap operas do not walk across a room, they glide. The women in soap operas are never without a man for more than three hours at a stretch. That is, if their story book relationship is about to break up, you can always be assured that there is another Adonis waiting just around the scene. The women in soap operas never do laundry, clean toilet bowls, or vacuum. The women is soap operas never have a single hair out of place or a nail chipped. I remember one scene in particular that exemplified this because it paralleled the same situation in my life. I was at the airport saying goodbye to my friend. A young lady on the soap opera was at the airport saying goodbye to her lover.

I will never forget how she looked. One perfectly shaped tear glistened down her luminously made up face. The wind blew through her shining blonde hair. (I wondered at the time, where the wind came from in the middle of the airport). A Beethoven symphony was playing in the background, and dozens of beautiful, white, casablanca lilies cascaded around her from out of the sky, (there must have been a hole in the airport roof), as her lover took her hand in his, and kissed it tenderly.

In my scenario, there was considerably more than one tear. My face was not luminous, it was wet. It did not glisten, it was too drenched in mascara and pancake make up to glisten too much. The only music I recall was a strange looking fellow’s sony walkman blasting something less than romantic in the background. I particularly remember this, because it drowned out the sound of whatever my friend was saying to me at the time. I have a strong suspicion it was goodbye, but I will never really know for sure.

Human beings behave differently on soap operas. Have you ever watched people go swimming on a soap opera? The women arrive at the pool in gold, laminated dresses enveloping their tiny bikinis, that match the gold flecks in their eyes. The men, I am sure, arrive straight from their previous employment with Playgirl magazine. If either party actually does manage to get wet, you can be assured that as they emerge out of the water, their hair suddenly parts perfectly, down the middle of their forehead, miraculously, similar to the parting of the red sea. The men’s bodies glisten with oils. Somehow, a little man with an oil can must have been down there at the bottom of the pool. Many times, I have waited beside my pool, (such as it is), hoping some man, any man, would emerge, tanned and oiled like that, all to no avail.

And have you ever noticed what it is like being sick on a soap opera? It almost makes you want to run out and collect as many germs as you can find, just so you can get admitted to those wonderful places of recuperation. Terminal patients never look terminal on a soap. They look lovely. They lie in their perfectly made up Wamsutta down beds while being attended to by physicians that look remarkably like Robert Redford and Tom Cruise.

And most of them seem to have sudden and astounding recoveries. Of course, with doctors like those, who could blame them. Even the dead on soap operas look wonderful. If I really must go someday, please God, let it be on a soap. I would love the world to remember me that way.

Let’s face it. The people on soaps do not attend to everyday realities. I do not recall even one soap opera person ever having to go the the john. I have given this much thought, and have decided that they just don’t have to do that sort of thing. They go to the powder room, (it’s much more civilized), to check that nothing is amiss, although God knows why, they couldn’t possibly be improved upon.

People in soap operas don’t cook much either. Rarely, have I seen anyone sweating over a hot stove. They hardly eat. That must be why they all remain so svelte. When they do feel the need to indulge, well, you can be assured it will be at their favorite local dining establishment. Probably a place called ?The Escargot Room? where they are greeted by a very distinguished frenchman named, Pierre, taken to their private table, where of course, their usual red roses, waterford crystal and candlelight awaits them. All of these details go without saying. They are often the only ones in the restaurant, so there is always plenty of room on the immaculately marbled dance floor.

It is here, of course, where the man, handsomely dressed in his tuxedo, whispers the most incredibly romantic things into the woman’s ear. Things such as, ?Darling, you touch my soul with your eyes.? I ask you, my friends, when was the last time your man said that to you?

Oh, and if it just happens to be a special occasion, such as an engagement, then a trio of violinists or a mini orchestra suddenly appears on the scene, and the lady is presented with a diamond ring, I am sure, borrowed from Elizabeth Taylor’s collection, while sipping on her Dom Perignon.

As of late, it has also occurred to me that people on soap operas never seem to pay bills, floss their teeth, or change their kid’s diapers. And you know something, I wouldn’t have it any other way. If I wanted to watch that, I wouldn’t have to turn on the TV. You can keep your reality. Give me Fantasy!

At least for one hour - every day - at four o’clock.

He organized several expeditions to Norway’s high-latitude regions where he established a network of observatories under the auroral regions to collect magnetic field data. The results of the Norwegian Polar Expedition conducted from 1899 to 1900 contained the first determination of the global pattern of electric currents in the polar region from ground magnetic field measurements. The discovery of X-rays inspired Birkeland to develop vacuum chambers to study the influence of magnets on cathode rays. An example of one of his experiments is depicted on the left front of the bank note. It shows a magnetized terrella, simulating the Earth, suspended in an evacuated box. Birkeland noticed that an electron beam directed toward the terrella was guided toward the magnetic poles and produced rings of light around the poles and concluded that the aurora could be produced in a similar way. He developed a theory in which energetic electrons were ejected from sunspots on the solar surface, directed to the Earth, and guided to the Earth’s polar regions by the geomagnetic field where they produced the visible aurora. Birkeland was nominated for the Nobel Prize no less than seven times.

It remains unknown to many that the products they use in their day-to-day living can be traced back to the productive years of the baby boomers. They are reputable brands of different items that every homemaker turns to for the ease of managing household chores such as washing clothes or dishes.

The household brand “Tide” dates back to 1946 when it was introduced to a market that uses automatic washing machines. When the brand gained nationwide distribution in 1949, its popularity in the detergent market was not a surprise. Tide had already gained the recognition of “America’s Washday Favorite” when other competing brands such as Ivory Snow began its decline.

The ‘Tide’ that consumers know today is the ‘Tide’ that has been reconstructed over the years. In its incipient stage, ‘Tide’ was a white-powdered bead until it was transformed into an orange-tinted clear liquid in 1984. The recent years also saw the introduction of new ‘Tide’ formulations such as the dark blue, liquid ‘Tide’ and the clear ‘Tide Free’.

Even the logo of ‘Tide’ speaks directly to its consumers because of the logo’s attractive and attention-grabbing design. The orange-and-yellow brand identity logo is credited to industrial designer Donald Deskey, although today’s ‘Tide’ logo has undergone some slight alteration for ‘Tide’s’ fiftieth anniversary in 1996.

As a global brand, the ‘Tide’ formula uses different market names such as ‘Ace’ in Latin America and ‘Alo’ in Turkey. Despite the differing names, ‘Tide’ continues to dominate the detergent market and proves its stature after bagging an ACS National Historical Chemical Landmark.

Tip (1) - Take Me Back Attack

Once a breakup occurs, the first initial reaction is to give your ex all your undivided attention. You may try to persuade your ex to work out the problems and give each other a second chance. However, what you are actually doing is sending him or her further away from your attempts. The best thing you should is actually nothing at all. By giving him or the space they need, you have the time to heal yourself.

Tip (2) - Drunk Dialing

Just like it suggests, drunk dialing leads to making a fool of yourself during the overnight hours. It entails you calling your ex during a fit of excessive drinking. Any feeling of loss you feel is enhanced with your drinking and all you want to do is hear your ex’s voice and make them see reason for why you should be back together again. You call them and may either get them on the phone or their voicemail. No matter what you think, this is never a good idea and needs to be avoided at all costs. All you will end up with is a nasty hangover and bruised ego.

Tip (3) - Soap Opera Splurge

This tip is namely for women so what is a soap opera splurge? It means you sit back, watch television, with a box of tissue nearby with a bunch of ice cream buckets near her. Not only is this not sexy, it’s also very unhealthy. If you think this will be the way you can get back your ex, you are seriously misled. Instead, lay down the spoon, put up the ice cream and pull yourself together. Get your courage together and work at getting back your ex.
